Fur Tutorial! by umbrafen Fur Tutorial! by umbrafen
Just threw this together because people have been asking C: This is how I do fur! Let me know if you have any questions.

:bulletblue: This is the shading brush I use (3rd one down)

:bulletblue: And this is the palette where I pull my shading colors from.
I used the first color in each set as a highlight color (the one you use in the overlay layer) and the last three as shading colors.

:bulletblue: I use this process is most of my paintings, best example is this one:

:bulletblue: If you want to do THICKER fur like this simply make the brush bigger and use shorter strokes.

:bulletblue: Again, feel free to ask questions!

:bulletblue: I used Photoshop CS6 for this, but it works in any Photoshop version as far as I know.

:bulletblue: BG texture by `cloaks

Fur painting is always a giant pain in the ass, but this method seems pretty no-nonsense to me, especially as a person who prefers using basic brushes. Sometimes that means shading can lack a lot of depth, and this looks like it'll work great without having to use fancy fur brushes. Thanks for the tutorial! :)

This was extremely helpful, as I have been trying to paint fur for a very long time. Thank you for taking the time to make this. It is much appreciated c: It's hard to find tutorials these days that pinpoint my exact need.

Yaay, nice tutorial :3 I haven't got PS (ok maybe PS elemets 8, but not on this computer, and it sucks xD), only gimp sooo, I haven't got multiply option too ^^ But I really often use similar technique to make fur. Only when I do big, more painterly pieces of work I try to paint fur only by brush, not by eraseing xP

What does the "Multiply" layer do? :)

When you set a layer to multiply it make the color of the layers under it darker~
